Mit ihnen und ihrem Autor etablierte sich neben Werner Schwab und Elfriede Jelinek eine dritte, durch ihren unverwechselbaren Sprachstil erkennbare Stimme auf den deutschsprachigen Bühnen. Jonigks Thema in den ersten Stücken ist die Familie als Tatort: sei es der sexuelle und emotionale Missbrauch an den Kindern (in Täter), sei es der Anpassungsdruck auf den schwulen Sohn (Du sollst mir Enkel schenken), sei es das Weiterleben faschistischer Rollenbilder (Rottweiler) – und das alles in einer Sprache von grotesker Komik, bei der einem allerdings öfter das Lachen im Hals steckenbleibt. Jonigks Bühnenwerk, schreibt Ute Nyssen in ihrem fundierten Nachwort, »reflektiert die Tendenzen des derzeitigen Theaters – beispielsweise dessen extreme Angst vor starken Gefühlen oder gar Pathos, die Neigung zur Randgruppenperspektive –, ohne diesen Tendenzen einfach nachzugeben. Zumindest den moralischen Anspruch, der selbstverständlich von Emotionen untrennbar ist, auf der Bühne aber vorwiegend an die Darstellung von Einzelschicksalen gekoppelt war (von den Klassikern bis zu Koltès), diesen Anspruch versucht Jonigks Theater aus dem Fundus der großen dramatischen Tradition zu retten und dem heutigen Theater entgegenzusetzen. Mit der Genehmigung zum Lachen macht er das etwas leichter.«
