Prefazione

Mi è stato chiesto di scrivere una prefazione alle pagine che seguono. Veramente non ne hanno bisogno, ma forse non saranno inopportune alcune parole per spiegarne la comparsa.

Si tratta di discorsi tenuti a certi miei amici nel Castello di Eerde, Ommen, Olanda. Il Castello è di uno stile che appartiene al principio del diciottesimo secolo ed è considerato uno dei migliori esempi di quel periodo. Esso è certamente uno dei luoghi più belli ch’io conosca. Tutto quanto il castello contiene, data pure dal principio del secolo decimottavo ed è in eccellente stato di conservazione. Gli arazzi sono meravigliosi e dànno all’ambiente un senso di antica dignità e bellezza. Il Castello è circondato da grandi alberi, vecchi di due o trecento anni, le cui altissime cime si perdono tra le nuvole. Strani bisbigli si odono talvolta tra quegli alberi.

Il luogo è pieno di bellezza e di felicità ed i miei discorsi volsero naturalmente su quell’eterno argomento.
