Es ist weiters eine Form des Gespräches. Die Verschiebung eines Konfliktes/einer persönlichen Fragestellung in einen anderen Bezugrahmen/Kontext, den einer Geschichte und deren dortige Bearbeitung schaffen gleichermaßen Nähe und Distanz zwischen Therapeut und Klient wie der Patient es braucht, erhalten die Würde und die Intimität der Person. Die in der Geschichte stattfindende Lösung / Wandlung / Neuorientierung sind therapeutische Angebote, die vom Patienten nach dessen Möglichkeiten angenommen werden. Die Grundmotivation dazu kommt vom Patienten selbst, ist er es doch, der dem Therapeuten bewusst oder unbewusst den „Auftrag dazu“ erteilt, indem er sich in die therapeutische Situation und Beziehung einlässt. Die Sprache der Metapher, ihr Symbolcharakter, und die „magischen Möglichkeiten“ arbeiten tief im Unterbewusstsein und können dort verborgene Prozesse direkter ansprechen als in einem üblichen therapeutischen Gespräch. Im Reich der Phantasie wo alles möglich ist, kann sich der Patient ohne Konsequenzen mit seinen Themen, Gefühlen und „Hindernissen“ freier bewegen und auf spielerische Art und Weise auf „vorweggenommene“ Lösungen reagieren. Dies ist der im Anschluss an das Hören der Geschichte stattfindende gemeinsame Prozess zwischen dem Therapeuten und seinem Klienten.
