Die These, die dieser Arbeit zugrunde liegt und die es im weiteren Verlauf zu untersuchen gilt, ist, dass der Song und insbesondere das Musikvideo als Kritik an zeitgenössischen Schönheitsidealen zu lesen ist; Schönheitsideale, die einen hohen Stellenwert in unserer Gesellschaft innehaben und die durch ihre Vormachtstellung und implizierten Zwang zur Anpassung den Verlust von Identität und die Degradierung des einzelnen, anpassungsunwilligen Individuums bedingen.
Zweifelsohne bedient sich Manson auch in The Beautiful People faschistoider Symbolik und Bilder, die er jedoch überspitzt und parodiert; eine Form der Selbstinszenierung, wie er sie auch bei seinen Live-Konzerten immer wieder betrieben hat.
Doch wie passen die Verwendung faschistoider Ästhetik, das Spiel mit faschistoider Symbolik, die sich tief in unser kollektives Geschichtsbewusstsein eingebrannt hat und damit unzweideutigen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt, und Kritik an dem modernen, nicht selten obsessiven Drang zu äußerlicher Perfektion zusammen? Manson selbst gibt – im Rahmen eines Interviews mit der Musikzeitschrift Visions 1997 auf das seinerzeit aktuelle Album Antichrist Superstar angesprochen – eine kurze aber prägnante Antwort darauf: „Es zielt auf die amerikanische Idee des Faschismus der Schönheit ab. Den Menschen wird das Gefühl gegeben, sie müßten [dic] in das vorgegebene Schema der Schönheit passen, sowohl spirituell als auch physisch.“ Ziel der folgenden Analyse ist es, einzelne Sequenzen des Videos auf ihre Bedeutung im Sinne der oben genannten These hin zu untersuchen und eine mögliche Interpretation zu geben.
