Auch wenn die Persuasion heute kaum noch als direkte Manipulation verstanden wird und durch Werbeziele wie das Kreieren oder Ansprechen eines Lifestyles und Orientierungsrahmens zum Ausdruck kommt, so ist sie doch nach wie vor die Basis der Werbekommunikation und soll letztlich zum Kauf eines Produkts beziehungsweise einer Dienstleistung oder zur Erweckung eines positiven Images von dem Beworbenen beitragen. Werbung kann also als eine Form der rhetorischen Kommunikation verstanden werden, die versucht, das Handeln oder die Meinung der Rezipienten zu beeinflussen.

Jeden Tag werden wir mit unzähligen Werbebotschaften konfrontiert. Die letzten Jahre brachten einen enormen Quantitätszuwachs im Zuge der Ausbreitung von Medien wie Kabelfernsehen und Internet mit sich. Doch wirklich die Aufmerksamkeit potentieller Kunden zu gewinnen ist werbefachliche Schwerstarbeit. Denn die Konkurrenz ist groß. Stellt sich an dieser Stelle die Frage: Ist Aufmerksamkeit überhaupt noch produzierbar? Ist das Problem der Werbung nicht ihre vermeintliche Macht, sondern ihre Ohnmacht? Die Unternehmen müssen sich also einiges einfallen lassen, um Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Und deshalb kommt es immer mal wieder vor, dass sie Grenzen überschreiten, indem sie gewisse Tabus brechen, um so ins Gespräch zu kommen und gleichzeitig im Gedächtnis der Konsumenten zu bleiben.
