Die umweltgerechte Altautoentsorgung gewinnt hinsichtlich eines immer größer werdenden Fahrzeugbestandes zunehmend an Bedeutung.
In Deutschland sind momentan 42,4 Millionen Fahrzeuge zugelassen, die nach Schätzungen der Kölner Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Autorecyclingbetriebe über 12 Millionen Tonnen nicht verwertbares Material enthalten. Von diesen rund 42 Millionen Fahrzeugen werden in Deutschland jährlich ca. 3 Millionen stillgelegt und ungefähr 1,5 Millionen verschrottet. EU-weit sind dies sogar 10 bis 12 Millionen Fahrzeuge. Doch die wenigsten landen bei einem qualifiziertem Verwerter. Viele dieser ausrangierten Kraftfahrzeuge wandern als „Gebrauchtwagen“ ins osteuropäische Ausland. Diesen Zustand will die Altauto-Verordnung der Europäischen Union ändern.
Seit vielen Jahren wird auf allen politischen Ebenen über das Recycling von Altautos diskutiert. In der Praxis jedoch zeigt sich ein ernüchterndes Bild. Es wird im Wesentlichen der Stahlschrott, der bis zu 75% des Fahrzeuggewichts ausmacht, verwertet. Der Großteil der Kunststoffe, Textilien, Glas- und Nichtmetallanteile wandert in den Schredder und landet als Schredderleichtmüllfraktion (SLF) auf der Deponie. Ob die SLF noch weiter verwertet werden kann, welche Recycling-Verfahren für Kunststoffe angewandt werden und welche Probleme die EU-Altauto-Verordnung in sich birgt wird in den nachfolgenden Kapiteln ausführlich erläutert.[1,2,3]
