Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Theaterwissenschaft, Tanz, Note: 1,7, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Veranstaltung: Seminar für Kulturelle Kommunikation : Aufklärung - Lessing und Diderot, 11 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: 26 Jahre währte Goethes Direktorat des Weimarer Hoftheaters. Gespielt wurde an 4136 Abenden, wie jemand sorgfältig nachgerechnet hatte, und zwar 2797 Sprechstücke - von der Tragödie über das Schauspiel bis zur Posse -, dazu 1084 Opern, Singspiele, Operetten, 255 Ballette. Erst nach mehreren erfolglosen Abschiedsgesuchen erhält Goethe 1817 auf seinen Protest gegen die Aufführung eines Schauspiels, in dem ein Hund die Hauptrolle einnahm, seinen Abschied. Auf Betreiben der ehemaligen Schauspielerin Karoline Jagemann, nunmehrige Maitresse des Weimarer Herzogs Carl August, hatte der kaiserlich-königliche Wiener Schauspieler Karsten auf der Weimarer Hofbühne das Gastspiel mit seinem dressierten Hundes geben dürfen, der in„Der Hund des Aubry des Mont Didier oder Der Wald bei Bondy“bei der Weimarer Gesellschaft offenbar besser ankam als die Goethesche Kunstanschauung. 1791, mitten in der Arbeit an naturwissenschaftlichen Aufgabenstellungen -Goethe arbeitete damals an„prismatischen Erscheinungen“und war dabei,„das erste Stück ›Optischer Beiträge‹ herauszugeben“-, kam ihm das Angebot Herzog CARL AUGUSTs, das Weimarer Hoftheater zu übernahmen, recht gelegen.„[M]it Vergnügen“,wie Goethe später berichtet, übernahm er „die Leitung des Hoftheaters“,damit - durch die ausdauernde Beschäftigung mit Wissenschaftlichen Stoffen - die„dichterische und ästhetische Seite nicht allzu kurz käme“. Die Jahre zuvor (1777 bis 1786) arbeitete Goethe amWilhelm Meister Roman, dessen Held vom Ehrgeiz auf die Bühne getrieben wird, ein „treffliche[r] Schauspieler“zu werden und der„Schöpfer eines künftigen Nationaltheaters, nach dem er so vielfältig hatte seufzen hören“. Der Roman sollte ursprünglich den TitelWilhelm Meisters theatralische Sendungtragen, doch die Arbeit kam ins Stocken, der Stoff bereitete Goethe einige Schwierigkeiten. In einem Gespräch mit Eckermann bekennt Goethe, dass gerade in den Jahren, da er Weimarer Theaterdirektor wurde,„die eigentliche Zeit[seines]Theater-Interesses schon vorüber“ war - was ihn auch daran hinderte, sein Romanprojekt in der geplanten Form fertig zu stellen.
