Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland würde mit ihrer Fläche von rund 356.978 Quadratkilometern 13 mal Platz in Indien finden. Vom Norden nach Süden gliedert sich Indien in drei Großräume. Die Gebirgsketten des Himalaja mit seinen Ausläufern, die Beckenlandschaften der großen Flüsse Ganges und Brahmaputra, sowie das Hochland von Dekkan, das mit Ausnahme der Küste ganz Südindien einnimmt.

Das Klima Indiens ist im Süden tropisch, im Norden subtropisch und wird im Wesentlichen vom Monsun bestimmt. Der jahreszeitliche Wechsel zwischen Regen- und Trockenzeit hat großen Einfluss auf die Vegetation und die Landwirtschaft des Landes. Der Südwest- Monsun beinhaltet 80% bis 90% der jährlichen Niederschlagsmenge ganz Indiens.

Indien ist nach China das bevölkerungsreichste Land der Erde mit über 1 Milliarde Einwohnern. Die Besiedlungsdichte schwankt jedoch regional sehr stark. In den städtischen Ballungsräumen beträgt die Zahl der Menschen pro Quadratkilometer über 6000, während sie in Berg- oder Wüstenregionen unter 100 liegt. Grundsätzlich ist Indien mit 27% städtischer Bevölkerung eher durch dörfliche Strukturen geprägt.
