geltenden Imago pietatis, die sich in der Kirche Santa Croce in
Gerusalemme in Rom befindet, beschreiben. Ich werde versuchen
darzustellen, unter welchen Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen sich das
Brustbild Christi ausgehend von dieser Ikone verbreitet hat. Dazu werde ich
die historischen Hintergründe betrachten.
Wenige ikonographische Themen wurden so intensiv betrachtet wie die
Imago pietatis und bleiben dennoch so kontrovers in ihrer Deutung und
Bedeutung, wie aber auch in ihrer Entstehungsgeschichte. Strittig ist in der
Literatur, welche Rolle diese Ikone spielt. Ist sie wirklich das viel berufene
„Urbild“, auf das alle westlichen Darstellungen sich beziehen? Wann
erreicht dieses Bild den Westen und wann wird es bekannt?
Aus der Frage der Rezeptionsgeschichte resultiert die Frage, wie viel
Einfluss die Ikone auf spätere Darstellungen des Schmerzensmannes hat.
Dazu bedarf es ausführlicher Bildbetrachtung, die ich in dieser Arbeit nicht
leisten kann. Es wird mir nur darum gehen, wie die Voraussetzungen für
eine Verbreitung des Bildes waren und warum dieses Darstellungsform
Christi ein so bekanntes eucharistisches Motiv wurde.
