Der verletzte Mübarek und die beiden Aladschy sind am Ziel angekommen. Durch eine Unvorsichtigkeit Halefs können sie ihn im Treska-Konak gefangen nehmen; zwar kann Kara Ben Nemsi ihn befreien, aber dabei entkommen die Schurken erneut. Bei der Verfolgung finden die Gefährten in der Hütte des Kohlenhändlers Jonak den schwerverletzten Mübarak, der zurückgelassen worden ist. Als bei der Hütte ein Bär auftaucht, wird der Mübarak von dem Tier getötet, bevor Kara Ben Nemsi es erlegen kann. Weiter geht es zu der sogenannten „Teufelsschlucht“, wo Kara Ben Nemsi eine ihnen gestellte Falle vermeiden kann und die Schurken endlich überwältigt werden können. Dabei stürzt Manach el Barscha in die Tiefe. Barud el Amasat stirbt wenig später im Zweikampf mit Osko, welcher gegen ihn Blutrache hat. Als er den Köhler Scharka belauscht, erfährt Kara Ben Nemsi, dass der Schut tatsächlich ein Mann namens Kara Nirwan ist und sich gewöhnlich in Rugowa aufhält.
