In der altchinesischen Philosophiegeschichte findet sich eine ähnliche Debatte, die vor zweitausend Jahren heftig geführt wurde. Die Frage war dabei: Ist der Mensch von Natur aus gut oder böse? Es gab vier Richtungen hinsichtlich der Problemlösung: die Pessimisten, wie Xunzi, die fest davon überzeugt waren, dass der Mensch von Geburt an böse sei. Die Optimisten, wie Menzi, die den Menschen von Natur aus für gut hielten. Die Neutralisten, wie Zhuangzi, die davon ausgingen, dass der Mensch bei der Geburt ein neutrales Wesen sei, also weder böse noch gut sei. Und die Eklektizisten, welche die Auffassung vertraten, dass manche Menschen von Natur aus eine gute Veranlagung hätten und manche eine schlechte.
Ich glaube, dass in allen diesen Problemlösungsweisen ein Fehler vorhanden ist. Es ist unsinnig, zu glauben, dass der Mensch von Natur aus gut oder böse ist, denn es gibt kein Gut und Böse in der Natur. Man kann nur das Verhalten des Menschen und die Folgen seines Handelns als gut oder böse bewerten, nicht aber sein Wesen an sich. Die Begriffe Gut und Böse können nur in einer zivilisierten Gesellschaft eine Bedeutung haben und infragegestellt werden. Konfuzius beschäftigte sich mit der Frage: ´Ist der Mensch von Natur aus gut oder böse?´ nicht. Es ist aber sicher, dass Konfuzius eine optimistische Position unabhängig von der Debatte vertrat. Konfuzius war der Ansicht, dass alle Menschen im Prinzip zu einem Adler werden könnten, wenn sie die vier Tugenden in ihrem Leben verwirklichen würden.
