Kein anderes Medium eröffnet so weitreichende Möglichkeiten der Interaktion und Information. Suchmaschinen kommt dabei eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Während noch vor einigen Jahren Internetnutzer als so genannte "Surfer" das Netz durchforstet haben, ist heutzutage die Benutzung von Suchmaschinen, im Hinblick auf die ständig anwachsenden Datenmengen im Internet, nicht mehr wegzudenken. Suchmaschinen gelten als Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Information.

Die derzeit mit Abstand dominierende Suchmaschine, mit einem Marktanteil von ca. 50% in den USA und sogar fast. 90% in Deutschland, ist Google. Um den Marktanteil zu behaupten und noch weiter auszubauen, verfolgt Google eine expansive und innovative Produktpolitik. So wurden im Laufe der Zeit zahlreiche Anwendungen eingeführt, welche die ursprüngliche Suchfunktion erweitern sowie Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit erleichtern sollen.

Am Beispiel Google möchte ich mich in folgender Arbeit mit der Frage beschäftigen, welche Bedeutung Suchmaschinen im Internetzeitalter zukommt und welche Auswirkungen sie auf Information, Kommunikation und Arbeit haben. Dabei soll bewusst auch auf historische und technische Aspekte eingegangen werden, um zum einen die schnelle Entwicklung sowie die allgemeine Bedeutung des Internets zu verdeutlichen und zum anderen meine Ausführungen zu dem Suchmaschinenbetreiber Google in einen geschichtlichen Kontext einzubetten. Bevor ich speziell auf Suchmaschinen und Google eingehe, möchte ich in einer einführenden Erläuterung die Entwicklung des Internets darlegen. Nach einem geschichtlichen Abriss der Entstehung Googles, sollen die Bedeutung der Suche und ausgewählte Beispiele von Google- Zusatzdienstleistungen vorgestellt und kritisch analysiert werden. Ferner möchte ich meine gewonnenen Erkenntnisse zusammenfassen und mögliche zukünftige Entwicklungen anreißen.
