Der Berliner Privatdetektiv Oliver John (OJ) wird von seinem alten Bekannten Dolf Parey - einem Hamburger Werbe-Starfotografen - engagiert, angeblich in einer Erpressungsangelegenheit. Als OJ in Dolfs Atelier auftaucht, findet er seinen Auftraggeber erschossen vor und gerät selbst in Verdacht, an dem Todesfall beteiligt zu sein.
Im Verlauf seiner Ermittlungen, die ihn tief in das Fotografen-Milieu der Werbebranche eindringen lassen, gelingt es OJ zwar, Dolfs Mörder zu entlarven, doch er vermag einen zweiten Mord nicht zu verhindern.

Ivy stolperte mit einer großen Mappe unter dem einen Arm und einem halb geschlossenen Regenschirm in der anderen Hand durch die automatische Tür. Die Mappe elektrisierte OJ für einen Augenblick.
Er stand auf und winkte Ivy zu sich an einen der Klubtische. Natürlich war sie schwarz gewandet und bemalt und sah insgesamt etwas besser aus als tags zuvor. Auf ihren Lidern schimmerte ein Hauch von Türkis.
„Hatten Sie einen Unfall?“, erkundigte sie sich erschrocken.
OJ strich über seine linke Gesichtshälfte. Die brannte nach seiner Selbstbehandlung wie Feuer, sah im Spiegel aber nicht mehr so auffällig aus, wie er fand.
„Sie hatten Schwierigkeiten, mit mir zu telefonieren“, sagte er ablenkend.
Sie lachte. „Tilman stand direkt neben mir. Ich habe gleich einen Anpfiff bekommen, weil ich Sie am Telefon nicht mit dem Namen angesprochen habe.“ Sie ahmte ihren Art Director nach: „So etwas muss für eine Kontakterin selbstverständlich sein!“
„Ich heiße Oliver“, sagte OJ. „Wenn es Not tut, dürfen Sie mich mit jedem beliebigen Namen ansprechen.“
„Ich heiße Evelyne. Alle sagen Ivy.“ Sie wollte die Mappe auf den Tisch legen, aber dafür war sie zu groß. Also lehnte sie das Monstrum neben sich an den Sessel. „Furchtbar, diese Dinger. Wenn es ein bisschen stürmisch ist, kommt man sich vor wie eine Segeljolle. Mappenschlacht im Windkanal heißt es, wenn die Fotografen antanzen.“ Sie kramte in ihrer Manteltasche. „Hier ist übrigens Cosimas Nummer. Ich glaube, die Kleine ist ziemlich am Boden. Sie mochte Dolf. Na ja, nicht so, wie man jetzt vielleicht meint - oder doch. Ich glaube, sie hat mit ihm geschlafen, wie alle anderen auch. Darin war Dolf unverbesserlich. Und man konnte ihm nicht mal richtig böse sein. So war er eben.“ Sie lächelte traurig vor sich hin. „Für mich stellte das jedenfalls kein besonderes Problem dar.“
OJs Misstrauen war geweckt. Weshalb erzählte sie ihm das, nachdem sie sich am Vortag so bedeckt gehalten hatte.
