Dabei stehen sich das überbordende Staunen der Zeitgenossen Berninis und die Faszination der späteren Barock- und Rokokogeneration mit der scheinbar nicht enden wollenden Polemik der Klassizisten und der barockfeindlichen Schema-Ästhetiker der Jahrhundertwende (20. Jahrhundert) gegenüber.3 Im letzten halben Jahrhundert sind Bernini und sein Zeitalter wieder zu hoher Ehre gekom-men, Apoll und Daphne hat seinen künstlerischen Ruhm wiedererlangt. Vor allem in den letzten 10 Jahren wurde viel zur Figurengruppe gesprochen und geschrieben, wobei auch hier die Urteile stark schwankend und sehr widersprüchlich ausfallen, was gleichwohl aus dem einzigartigen Charakter der Daphnegruppe resultiert. In dieser Arbeit soll sich mit dem Aufbau, dem Bedeutungsgehalt und vor allem mit der gegensätzlichen Rezeption und den Kritiken (bis ca. 1931) des skulpturalen Werkes Bernini auseinandergesetzt werden. In die Thematik eingeflochten werden weiterdessen kunsthistorische, ästhetische und interpretatorische Problemstellungen, sie sich aus der Skulptur Apoll und Daphne ergeben.
