Audre Lorde wächst im New Yorker Harlem als dritte Tochter von Einwanderern aus der Karibik auf. Stolz und mütterliche Abschirmung hindern die Eltern, rassistische Diskriminierung als System zu erklären, sie verstehen sie als Unzulänglichkeiten nicht ernstzunehmender Mitmenschen. Mit 17 Jahren löst sich Lorde von der Familie und bewegt sich in einer Gruppe junger, unkonventioneller Frauen. Die McCarthy Ära bricht an und sie ist u.a. in Aktivitäten gegen die Verurteilung der Rosenbergs engagiert. Lordes lebendige Schilderung der New Yorker Lesben-Subkultur der fünfziger Jahre ist ein Stück feministischer Geschichtsschreibung. Lorde entwickelt ihre Identität als Schwarze Lesbe aufgrund ihrer Zugehörigkeit zu einer lesbischen Community, die vornehmlich weiß und oft rassistisch ist und einer Schwarzen Community, die häufig sexistisch und homophob ist.
Schwarz und lesbisch erlebt Lorde trotz der Spannungen gesellschaftlichen Ursprungs nicht als polare Dualitäten sondern als sich überlappende Einheiten. In Zami werden Anderssein und Unterschiedlichkeiten für Lorde zur Quelle ihrer Stärke und zur Grundlage ihres Aufrufs Anderssein und Unterschiede konstruktiv zu nutzen.
