Der Roman fand zuerst wenig Zustimmung bei den Kritiker: „the majority found the plot too horrible and improbable... there are too many atrocities, too many strange horrors, and finally, there is no conclusion to it; it breaks off suddenly in a mysterious way, which is not only destitute of all vraisemblance, but is purely perplexing and vexatious”. 1 Das änderte sich später, indem dem Roman mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden ist. Die Untersuchungen von Frederick S. Frank (1981) und Douglas Robinson (1982) belegen eine steigende Interesse für den Poe´s Roman 2 .

Ein der Themen, das durch mehrere Werke Edgar Poe´s zieht, ist die Auseinandersetzung zwischen zwei Welten, der realen und der fantastischen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das innere Welt und das Empfinden eines Einzelnen, eigene Wahrnemung der für einen selbst traumhaft erscheinenden Realität.

Das Thema der vorliegenden Hausarbeit ist die Technik der Darstellung des Traumhaft-Fantastischen im Roman Edgar Poe´s „The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym“. Als erstes wird die Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem Traum und Realität im Roman dargestellt. Danach wird auf die Verrätselung der Autorschaft im Roman eingegangen. Weiterere Kapitel der Arbeit beschäftigten sich mit dem Thema der Farbensymbolik, die eine wichtige Rolle in der Darstellung des Traumhaft-Fantastischen spielt, sowohl mit der Frage in wieweit die im Roman beschriebenen fantastische Eregnisse fantastisch sind oder ob es für sie eine Erklärung gibt. Danach wird auf die Rolle der Zahlen und der Zeit eingegangen und zum Schluss wird darauf eingegangen, in wie weit Edgar Poe das Fantastische durch das göttliche „Providence“ darzulegen versucht.
