Er beschreibt die Vision eines idealisierten Staates in dem eine perfekte soziale Harmonie hergestellt werden konnte. In diesem Staat gibt es keinen Privatbesitz und Gewalt existiert nicht. Jeder hat die Möglichkeit in einer Umgebung religiöser Toleranz zu leben und zu arbeiten. Die Gegenüberstellung des idealisierten Staates mit den realen Lebensumständen des Europas im 16. Jahrhundert, durch den Reisebericht des weitgereisten Hythlodaeus, führt zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den realen Gegebenheiten. Diese Arbeit zeigt die Bedeutung des Buches Utopia von Sir Thomas More für die Entwicklung der literarischen Gattung Utopie auf, um die literarische Bedeutung dieses Werkes hervorzuheben. Im Anschluss daran steht die Untersuchung des platonischen Einflusses auf Mores Werk im Mittelpunkt. Dieser ist von besonderer Bedeutung, da die Literatur dieser Epoche von den antiken Schriftstellern geprägt war. Im weiteren Verlauf des Textes wird die Gesellschaft von Utopia auf Lösungsansätze für die Kritikpunkte der „alten Welt“ untersucht. Die Ergebnisse dieser Betrachtungen leiten den Übergang zur Darstellung der Produktionsweise der Utopier ein, da diese als Mittelpunkt des gesellschaftlichen Lebens auch die Abhängigkeit zu familiären, politischen, religiösen und weiteren Einrichtungen beschreiben.
