Aufgrund der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungstendenzen kann informal care zunehmend als wichtiges Standbein einer funktionierenden Altenpflege betrachtet werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat das Ziel, einen thematisch breiten Einblick in die Forschungsaktivitäten des Themenbereiches um formal und informal care, insbesondere bezüglich deren Beziehung zueinander, zu geben. Die Analyseergebnisse zeigen, dass zwischen ihnen sowohl Substitutions- als auch Ergänzungsbeziehungen bestehen. Informal care ist im Falle geringer Pflegeansprüche ein effektiver Ersatz für formal care Leistungen. Informal care von Pflegebedürftigen wird zumeist von deren unverheirateten Kindern, die geringe Opportunitätskosten haben, geleistet. Die Entscheidung für die Übernahme von informal care Aufgaben wird von rationalen und irrationalen Aspekten determiniert. Der Einsatz von informal care reduziert die staatlichen Ausgaben für formal care durch die Reduktion ihrer Inanspruchnahme. Existierende Forschungsergebnisse in Kombination mit aktuellen, sozialen Entwicklungstendenzen implizieren politischen Handlungsbedarf, zu dem beispielsweise die gezielte Förderung und Motivation von Pflege durch Angehörige oder auch der Ausbau des professionellen Altenpflegeangebots gehören.
