Philadelphos skizzieren würde. Zumindest oberflächlich, denn diese dienen lediglich zur kategorischen Unterteilung einer komplexen Persönlichkeit, welche es verstand seine ihm verfügbaren Instrumentarien zu seinen Gunsten zu nutzen. So schrieb Macchiavelli knapp 1800 Jahre später in seinem Kapitel „Von neuen Herrschaften, die durch eigene Waffen und Tapferkeit erworben werden“ im Kontext der Renaissance: „Denn der Neuordner hat alle die zu Feinden, die sich in der alten Ordnung wohlbefinden, und laue Mitstreiter in denen, welche bei der Neuordnung zu gewinnen hoffen.“

Wäre man sich der Zeitspanne der Entstehung des Werkes „Der Fürst“ nicht gewahr, so würde man der Annahme verfallen, es wäre im Kontext der hellenistischen Königreiche verfasst worden. Denn ähnlich wie im Altertum, schienen sich Speergewonnene Reiche, auch Jahrhunderte später, mit der gleichen Problematik eines ungeordneten Herrscherwechsels konfrontiert zu sehen. Sowohl Stabilität des Reiches als auch der Fortbestand der Dynastie können durch mangelnde Legitimation und Anbindung an die Person des Königs bzw. dessen Nachfolger gefährdet werden. So war der König in den hellenistischen Königreichen nicht „allein Haupt bzw. Mitte des Staates, sondern geradezu dessen Konstitutens“ .

Um die Gefahr der Instabilität durch innere und äußere Kräfte zu reduzieren, sahen insbesondere die Ptolemäer in der „designierten Thronfolge“ bei Ptolemaios I. Soter und in der Endogamen Ehe bei Ptolemaios II. Philadelphos, die Möglichkeit von der auf rein Charisma basierenden Herrschaft auf eine dynastische Kontinuität zu lenken und damit das „Gentil- bzw. Erbcharisma“ auf einen Zweig zu verengen. Dies zu erreichen bediente sich insbesondere Ptolemaios II. diverser Instrumentarien, welche nicht nur seine eigene Legitimation als Epigone, sondern die Legitimation seiner Dynastie festigen sollte und um damit die „Erinnerungen“ an das Speergewonnene Reich zu negieren.

Diese Instrumentarien und deren Wirkungen sowie der Charakter Ptolemaios II. Philadelphos sind Gegenstand dieses Essay, welches unter dem Aspekt herrschaftssoziologischer Thesen den Übergang einer charismatischen Herrschaft zu einer Herrschaft mit traditionellen und bürokratischen Elementen untersuchen wird.
