In dem facettenreichen Komplex der antiken Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Okzident und Orient nimmt das Verhältnis Roms zu den Parthern von der Zeit des Pompeius bis zum Beginn des Prinzipats zwar eine historisch bedeutsame Stellung ein, wird jedoch bis heute im forschungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs nicht gebührend systematisch thematisiert. Einer der Gründe dafür ist das langjährige Forschungsdesiderat hinsichtlich des parthischen Reiches selbst, welches − abgesehen von zusammenfassenden Darstellungen älteren Datums − erst 1996 dank der Veröffentlichung der Akten des Kolloquiums von Eutin, welche Untersuchungen basierend auf archäologischen, epigraphischen und numismatischen Neufunden beinhalten, eine Minderung erfahren hat.
Im Hinblick auf die römisch-parthischen Beziehungen bezeugt die diesjährige Veröffentlichung „Rome’s wars in Parthia“ von Rose Mary Sheldon das forschungswissenschaftliche Interesse insbesondere an den militärischen Sequenzen des zwischenstaatlichen Aufeinandertreffens. Sheldon thematisiert dem aktuellen Forschungsstand entsprechend die römischen Feldzüge in das Partherreich in der Zeit von der ausgehenden römischen Republik bis zum Einsetzen der Spätantike und stellt damit das englischsprachige Pendant zu Adolf Günthers wesentlich älteren Veröffentlichung „Beiträge zur Geschichte der Kriege zwischen Römern und Parthern“ dar.
