Das Bargeld hat sich bis zur heutigen Zeit als Zahlungsmittel durchgesetzt und stellt bei den Bundesbürgern ein unverändert beliebtes Zahlungsmittel dar. So ist der Bargeldumlauf in den letzten zehn Jahren kontinuierlich angewachsen.(2) Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts haben sich eine ganze Reihe anderer Möglichkeiten von
Zahlungsmitteln entwickelt und in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung durchgesetzt. Man spricht von dem bargeldlosen Zahlungsverkehr. Dazu gehören neben den Bar-, Verrechnungs- und Reiseschecks, dem elektronischen Lastschrifteinzugsverfahren, Überweisung, Vorkasse und Nachnahme die Zahlungsmittel des klassischen Electronic Commerce, die kartengestützten Zahlungssysteme.(3)
