Die amerikanische Adorno-Preisträgerin und Feministin Judith Butler hat Philosophie an der Yale Universität und an der Universität Heidelberg studiert und gilt als „Philosophin der Gender“. In ihren verschiedenen Werken näherte sie sich dem Begriff Gender und was dieser überhaupt bedeutet. Dabei spricht sie auch immer wieder von einem Rahmen, der durch Normen gebildet wird. In ihren Arbeiten wird wiederholt deutlich, dass man bestimmte Normen zwar brechen, sich nach anderen jedoch auch wieder richten muss:
"Infolgedessen ist das „Ich“, das ich bin, zugleich durch die Normen geschaffen und von den Normen abhängig, es ist aber auch bemüht, so zu leben, dass es ein kritisches und veränderndes Verhältnis zu ihnen unterhalten kann. "

Das Individuum muss demnach versuchen in eben jenem Verhältnis zu den Normen zu stehen. Es handelt sich hierbei um
"[d]ie Normen, die eine idealisierte menschliche Anatomie regieren [und] einen selektiven Sinn dafür [produzieren], wer menschlich ist und wer nicht, welches Leben lebenswert ist und welches nicht".
