Olaf hatte einen verzückten Ausdruck im Gesicht. Er blickte unverwandt auf Gerno, obwohl dieser sich selten und, wie es Zoe schien, unverbindlich an ihn wandte. Immer, wenn Gerno das Wort an seine Frau richtete, huschten Olafs Augen zwischen den Gesichtern der Eheleute hin und her, als verfolge er eine spannende Angelegenheit. Als Zoe ihre Frage wiederholte, sah er sie lachend an. Sagte jaja, woraus zu schließen war, dass er nicht zugehört hatte. Dabei rutschte er auf seinem Stuhl umher, sein Mund stand offen, Zähne und Augen blitzten.
Zoe fuhr fort, den Kuchen auf die Teller zu verteilen. Sobald Gerno den seinen in großen Stücken zu essen begann, schob Olaf seinen Teller, von dem er nichts genommen hatte, zu Gerno hin und fragte, ob dieser Olafs Kuchen haben wollte, er sei nämlich noch vom Mittag her satt.
Das ist ein guter Kuchen, sagte Gerno, mit einer tiefen schwingenden Stimme. Als ihn Olaf darauf mit strahlenden Augen anblickte, nahm Gerno die Gabel, trennte ein Stück von dem Kuchen ab und hielt es Olaf vor, der jetzt ohne zu zögern,
