Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1,3, Helmut-Schmidt-Universität - Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg, Veranstaltung: Die Epoche Iustinians, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Dies alles widerfuhr den Menschen, nachdem der Dämon Menschengestalt angenommen hatte, und er selber gab als Kaiser Veranlassung hierzu; (…) was er mit heimlicher Macht und infolge seiner dämonischen Natur der Menschheit Leiden zufügte. Während seiner Regierung ereigneten sich viele nie gekannte Katastrophen, (…).“ Bei der vorstehenden, in der Forschung oft zitierten Beschreibung handelt es sich um eine Aussage des Hofschreibers Prokopios von Kaisarea aus dem 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr., der über den römischen Kaiser Iustinian den Ersten schreibt. Ohne eine Epochenbetrachtung vorwegzunehmen und völlig unabhängig von dem Verhältnis zwischen Verfasser und der beschriebenen Person, lässt sich zu dem oben stehenden Zitat folgende Aussage treffen: Der Schreiber Prokop muss, aufgrund der geschehenen „Katastrophen“ und den „Leiden“, die seiner Meinung nach von seinem Kaiser Iustinian, direkt oder indirekt verursacht wurden, eine besonders schlimme Aneinanderreihung von Katastrophen erlebt haben.
In Übereinstimmung dazu, lassen sich in den so genannten Novellen des Kaisers Iustinian Äußerungen finden, in welchen er die schlechte Moral und Disziplin der Bevölkerung als Ursache für die schlimmen Hungersnöte und Erdbeben sieht. Beide Aussagen stimmen in dem Punkt überein, dass die Ursachen dieser Katastrophen in menschlichem Fehlverhalten gesucht werden. Auch die Wahrnehmung der Katastrophen als eine Strafe Gottes lässt sich in den Quellen wieder finden.
Weil Naturkatastrophen in der antiken Geschichtsschreibung nicht erstmals im 6. Jahrhundert Beachtung finden, sondern bereits das erste Geschichtswerk der Antike, die Ilias des Homer, zu Anfang von einer Pest berichtet, muss der Unterschied zwischen der Wahrnehmung von Naturkatastrophen in der Antike allgemein und der des iustinianischen Zeitalters von besonderer Bedeutung für die Alte Geschichte sein.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll folgende zentrale Fragestellung untersucht werden: Warum gilt die Epoche Iustinians und die Deutung der stattgefunden Naturkatastrophen als besonders wichtig für die Antike und welche Deutungsmuster lassen sich in der Epoche Iustinians feststellen. Weiterhin geht es um die Frage, wie die Menschen mit Naturkatastrophen umgegangen sind und welche Konsequenzen die Katastrophen gesamtgesellschaftlich hatten.
