Diese für die Erzählung sehr zentralen Handlungselemente haben viele Forscher zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema „Schuld und Buße“ in Gregorius veranlasst. Grundlegende Probleme bei dieser „Schuldfrage“ sind, erstens dass Hartmanns Text keineswegs eindeutig ist, zweitens dass es den meisten heutigen Lesern schwer fällt, eine Schuld bei Gregorius überhaupt zu identifizieren, und drittens dass die Lesart und das Verständnis der Erzählung davon stark beeinflusst sind, ob man den Text als Legende oder als episches Werk liest.
Da die Gattungszuordnung des Gregorius die Lesart und Interpretation des Werkes stark beeinflusst, werden vor der Präsentation der verschiedenen Schuldfragepositionen einige Implikationen der verschiedenen relevanten Leserrollen und Gattungszuordnungen kurz dargestellt (Kapitel 2).
Eine wichtige, aber auch umstrittene, Forschungsposition in der Schuldfrage ist diejenige, die Gregorius als Legende liest, und die eine persönliche Schuld bei Gregorius identifizieren will. Diese Position tendiert dazu, vorzugsweise theologische Argumente vorzuführen, das Werk als theologische Programmschrift zu lesen und den literarischen Text selbst als zweitrangig zu behandeln. Des Überblicks halber werden nur die Grundannahmen dieser Position angegeben und diskutiert (Kapitel 3).
Andere Forschungspositionen finden, dass Gregorius keine persönliche Schuld hat, und sie tendieren dazu, das Werk literarisch zu lesen, weswegen ihre Gattungsauffassungen eher in Richtung Roman als in Richtung Legende gehen. Zu diesen Positionen gehören Forscher, die literaturwissenschaftlich oder sozialgeschichtlich orientiert sind. Unter diesen episch orientierten Forschern werden einige zentrale Positionen dargelegt (Kapitel 4).
Ziel des Aufsatzes ist, einen Überblick über wesentliche Problemstellungen innerhalb der Schulddiskussionen zu geben. Eine „endgültige“ Lösung einer Diskussion, die die Forscher über 100 Jahre intensiv beschäftigt hat, ist nicht angestrebt. Trotzdem ist es die Hoffnung, dem Leser dieser Arbeit die Botschaft vermitteln zu können, dass die Gattungszuordnung für die Interpretation des Werkes von zentraler Bedeutung ist, und dass man mit Vorteil Gregorius als episches Werk lesen kann.
