Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Kunst - Bildhauerei, Skulptur, Plastik, Note: 1,3, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (Institut für Europäische Kunstgeschichte), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die frühe Elfenbeinforschung hat ergeben, dass viele ottonische Elfenbeinarbeiten im 10. Jahrhundert aus dem byzantinischen Motivreichtum stammen und demnach entweder dessen Elemente in die eigenen Arbeiten übernommen oder auch in abgewandelter Form aufgenommen haben.
Die im Pariser Musée de Cluny aufbewahrte Elfenbeintafel ist ein solches Beispiel. Sie zeigt Christus, wie er das kaiserliche Paar Otto II. und seine byzantinische Gemahlin Theophanu krönt. Bei dieser Eheschließung im Jahre 972 wurde ein historisch und politisch hoch brisanter Prozess vollzogen, da eine Porphyrogenneto, eine purpurgeborene Prinzessin aus dem fernen byzantinischen Reich dem deutschen zukünftigen Kaiser zur Frau gegeben wurde. Die Elfenbeintafel, welche 1842 von Du Sommerard veröffentlicht wurde, soll ein Zeugnis dieses Bündnisses sein. Dabei stellt sich die Frage, ob dieses Werk in Konstantinopel oder in Deutschland bzw. in Teilen Italiens angefertigt worden ist, ob es also byzantinisch oder ottonischer Herkunft ist, was die Frage nach dem Künstler oder der Werkstatt impliziert.
