Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: Sehr gut (1,0), Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Institut für Filmwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Landschaft und filmischer Raum, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Wälder waren und sind seit jeher Quellen der Inspiration für Künstler jedweder Richtung gewesen. Zum einen mag dies auf ihre Unergründlichkeit zurückzuführen sein, zum anderen auch auf ihr erdgeschichtlich hohes Alter und die daraus resultierende mythologische Aufladung. Wälder können verschiedene Funktionen in der Kunst einnehmen: als pittoreskes Beiwerk, als Ort der Erholung, der Stille, der Träumerei, aber auch als Verursacher von Phobien. In einigen Filmgenres wie z.B. dem Märchenfilm oder dem Gruselund Horrorfilm ist der Wald ein nahezu unverzichtbares Element, wobei er gerade dort nicht nur die Rolle des Handlungsortes übernimmt, sondern aktiv in die Geschichte miteinbezogen wird - als Protagonist oder Antagonist.

Unter den vielen möglichen Waldbildern erscheint mir der Wald als Handlungsort von Träumen - als Traumlandschaft - als lohnendes Objekt einer näheren Untersuchung. In solchen Traumlandschaften finden sich wiederum andere Formen der Walddarstellung wieder, daher ist es notwendig, auf diese unterschiedlichen Darstellungsarten anhand exemplarischer Untersuchungen einzugehen.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ist es selbstverständlich nicht möglich, auf alle erdenklichen Aspekte der Walddarstellung einzugehen. Ich beschränke mich auf diejenigen, die mir hinsichtlich der Thematik der Traumlandschaft relevant erscheinen. Zunächst werde ich mich ausgewählten Aspekten des Waldbildes der Romantik widmen. In einer Art Gegendarstellung wende ich mich der rationalen Waldrezeption, insbesondere der Rezeption der Aufklärung, zu, die als Wegbereiter der Moderne auch in unserer Zeit noch gültig ist. Die Abstraktion auf die Traumebene resultiert aus einer Konfrontation dieser beiden gegensätzlichen Rezeptionen.

Die aufgezeigten Ergebnisse werde ich anschließend anhand Neil Jordan’s The Company of Wolves von 1984, der auf den beiden Kurzgeschichten The Company of Wolves und Wolf-Alice der britischen Autorin Angela Carter basiert, noch einmal verdeutlichen.
