Lt. T.E. Lawrence wird 1916 nach Kairo, Ägypten versetzt und arbeitet dort im Hauptquartier der britischen Streitkräfte. Im Hauptquartier herrscht Nervosität. Dryden, der Leiter der Spionage-Abwehr-Abteilung, hofft auf einen Aufstand der Araber unter der Führung von Prinz Feisal. Damit könnten die Araber die britischen Stellungen entlasten. Lt. Lawrence, Kenner der Arabiens und seiner Bewohner wird als Beobachter in ein Wüstencamp geschickt. Er soll den Verlauf der Arabischen Revolution gegen die Türken beobachten. Zusammen mit Tafas, einem Einheimischen durchquert er die Wüste. Sein Ziel ist das versteckt liegende Lager von Feisal zu finden. Bevor das Lager erreicht wird Tafa, als er verbotener Weise aus der Quelle trinkt von Scheich Ali ermordet. Die Quelle gehört einen rivalisierenden Stamm. Colonel Brighton, Kommandeur in Jordanien, ist Feislas Verbindungsmann zu britischen Hauptquartier und stößt zu Lawrence. Er bringt in zu Feisals Lager, welches von türkischen Bombern angegriffen wurde.
