Gerade von Prometheus und seiner Symbolkraft als Held und fortschrittlichen Rebell der Aufklärung war Goethe augenscheinlich sehr fasziniert. Die Mythologie um Prometheus hat Goethe so kontinuierlich beschäftigt wie keine andere. Doch wie wird in Pandora am klassischen Mythos der Übergang in die moderne Arbeitswelt verarbeitet?
Obwohl Goethe das Festspiel nie fertig gestellt hat und daher nur ein Fragment erhalten ist, können aus seinen Aufzeichnungen über die ge-plante Wiederkehr Pandoras Rückschlüsse für die Interpretation des Fragments gezogen werden. Auffällig für die Figur des Prometheus ist die Umdeutung seines Charakters im Werk Goethes. In jungen Jahren erfährt Prometheus noch eine heldenhafte Verehrung durch Goethe und die Formierung der Aufklärer in Anlehnung an die Lichtmetapher. Dies ist in Pandora anders. Ebenso die positive Belegung Pandoras mit der Erlösung der Menschheit ist ein weiterer Schritt Goethes mit der zeitgemäßen Neubesetzung im Zeichen der weiblichen Schönheit. Ihre Gaben, die ebenfalls nicht mehr als „Geisel der Menschheit“, sondern als Geschenke des Glücks umgedeutet werden, sollten Wissenschaft und Technik mit-einander versöhnen. Gerade die klassische Form der antiken Mythosges-talten mit moderner Arbeitswelt setzt die Aktualität des goethischen Zeit-alters als Umbruch von einer „alten“ zu einer „neuen“ Welt dar. Im Nebeneinander der verschiedenen Welten herrscht eine „sinnentleerte, gewalttätige Ordnung, und die Reintegration, die wechselvolle Durch-dringung der verschiedenen Bereiche.“ So wird mit der Verbindung in Form der Kinder der Titanen eine mögliche Perspektive des Dramas auf eine sinnvolle, menschenfreundliche Gestaltung der Arbeit mit der Kunst (Kultur) eröffnet, die sich ihrer gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung nicht entzieht, sondern eine Symbiose von Mensch, Natur und Technik schafft. Am antiken Mythos entwickelt Goethe die Problematik der modernen Arbeitswelt. Im Folgenden wird die Konstellation der Gegensätze und de-ren Konfliktpotenzial näher beleuchtet.
