Una vez dentro se dejaba caer otra vez el asiento, se volvía el respaldo a su sitio y se acomodaba la persona del peor modo que puede estar criatura humana fuera del potro de tormento. En el segundo piso bullía, gritaba, coceaba y relinchaba toda la chusma del pueblo sin diferencia de clases, lo mismo el marinero de altura que el que pescaba muergos en la bahía o el peón de descarga; la señá Amalia la revendedora igual que las que acarreaban «el fresco» a la capital. Llamábase a aquel recinto «la cazuela». Las butacas eran del mismo aborrecible pelote que los palcos y el forro debió ser también del mismo color, aunque no podía saberse con certeza. Detrás de ellas había, a la antigua usanza, un patio para ciertos menestrales que, por su edad, su categoría de maestros u otra circunstancia cualquiera, repugnaban subir a la cazuela y juntarse a la turba alborotadora. Del techo pendía una araña, cuajada de pedacitos de vidrio en forma prismática, con luces de aceite. Más adelante se substituyó éste con petróleo, pero yo no alcancé a ver tal reforma. Debajo de la escalera que conducía a los palcos había un nicho cerrado con persiana que llamaban «el palco de don Mateo». De este don Mateo ya hablaremos más adelante. Pues ha de saberse que en tal lacería de teatro se representaban los mismos dramas y comedias que en el del Príncipe y se cantaban las óperas que en la Scala de Milán. ¿Parece mentira, eh? Pues nada más cierto. Allí ha oído por vez primera el narrador de esta historia aquellas famosas coplas: Si oyes contar de un náufrago la historia, Ya que en la tierra hasta el amor se olvida... Por cierto que le parecían excelentes, y el teatro una maravilla de lujo y de buen gusto. Todo en el mundo depende de la imaginación. Ojalá la tuviese tan viva y tan fresca como entonces para entretenerles a ustedes agradablemente algunas horas. También ha visto el Don Juan Tenorio. Y sus difuntos untados de harina de trigo, su comendador filtrándose por una puerta atada con cuerdas, su infierno de espíritu de vino y su apoteosis de papel de forro de baúles, le impresionaron de tal modo que aquella noche no pudo dormir
