Erste Auswirkungen der Klimaveränderungen sind bereits heute spürbar. Untersuchungen zeigen, dass gegenläufig zum aktuellen Trend die globalen Emissionen bis zum Jahr 2050 im Vergleich zum Jahr 1990 um mindestens 50 % reduziert werden müssen, um eine Verdopplung der CO2-äquivalenten Treibhausgaskonzentration des vorindustriellen Wertes zu verhindern. Der Energiewirtschaft kommt auf Grund des Anteils fossiler Energieträger von 85-90% an der Treibhausgasemission eine besondere Bedeutung zu.
Zur Lösung der Probleme aus der konventionellen Energieversorgung werden seit Jahren erneuerbare Energien wie Photovoltaik oder Windkraft vom Gesetzgeber in hohem Maße gefördert. Bis 2020 sollen diese in Deutschland 20% (EU 22%) der elektrischen Energieversorgung erzeugen, wovon mehr als 10% auf die in den letzten Jahren stark wachsende Windkraft entfällt. Der Geschwindigkeit des Ausbaus erneuerbarer Energieerzeuger sind aber technische Grenzen gesetzt. Bis diese den Strombedarf in Deutschland vollständig abdecken können, sind für die Erreichung der Klimaschutzziele Energieeffizienzmaßnahmen notwendig.
Durch die Zunahme dezentraler Energieerzeuger und Reduzierung konventioneller Kraftwerke wird zur Aufrechterhaltung der Versorgungssicherheit der Netze zunehmend eine kommunikative Vernetzung und aktive Steuerung von Energieerzeugung und -verbrauch (Smart Grids) notwendig.
Smart Metering setzt genau bei diesen Problemstellungen an. Durch die Umstellung der Zählertechnologie von den nicht kommunikationsfähigen Ferrariszählern hin zu vernetzten bidirektional kommunizierenden intelligenten Zählern (Smart Meter), werden die Voraussetzungen für Smart Grids geschaffen. Zugleich bietet das Smart Metering neben Effizienzsteigerungen durch eine automatische Zählerfernauslesung und -steuerung das Potential zur Steigerung der Energieeffizienz durch einen integrierten regelmäßigen Feedbackprozess verbrauchter Energie. Empirischen Studien zufolge werden durch die regelmäßigen Informationen 5 bis 15% an elektrischer Energie eingespart.
