Es stellt sich die Frage, wie ein Unternehmen seine High Potentials identifizieren kann. Diese Frage soll im Folgenden beantwortet werden. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass sich im Unternehmen High Potentials befinden, die es zu identifizieren gilt.

Die systematische Identifizierung der High Potentials setzt einen geeigneten methodischen Ansatz voraus, der in der gesamten Organisation angewandt wird. Dieser Prozess muss in allen Bereichen des Unternehmens nach einheitlichen Kriterien erfolgen, damit sichergestellt ist, dass die Ergebnisse nach einem einheitlichen Standard erzielt werden. Ein geeigneter methodischer Ansatz, um die Potenzialträger zu identifizieren, ist eine Potenzialanalyse. Als Vorstufe zur Durchführung einer Potenzialanalyse ist die Erarbeitung eines unternehmensspezifischen Anforderungsprofils oder Kompetenzmodells sinnvoll, anhand derer später eine Aussage über die individuellen Fähigkeiten und das vermutete Entwicklungspotenzial eines Mitarbeiters getroffen wird.
