Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IuK- Technologien) haben das Leben in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark beeinflusst und ein immer stärkeres Zusammenwachsen der Marke weltweit begünstigt. Diese Globalisierungstendenz bewirkt erhebliche organisatorische Veränderungsprozesse, da die Grenzen des Unternehmens immer mehr verschwimmen und nicht mehr so klar definierbar sind. Unternehmen müssen sich neuen Herausforderungen stellen, d.h. sie müssen sich intern in allen Bereichen auf diese wachsende Dynamik der Märkte einstellen, so dass sie dann extern auf die veränderten Wettbewerbssituationen reagieren können und an ihnen teilhaben. Welche organisatorischen Veränderungen virtuelle Organisationsformen mit sich bringen, wie sie aufgebaut sind, welche Bereiche des Unternehmens von diesem Wandel betroffen sind, was der Begriff „virtuell“ für die unternehmerische Tätigkeit bedeutet, soll Ziel dieser Ausarbeitung sein. Aber auch die praxisnahe Betrachtungsweise virtueller Organisationsformen soll in dieser Ausarbeitung behandelt werden. Denn werden virtuelle Organisationskonzepte in der Praxis überhaupt umgesetzt und wenn ja, in welchem Umfang? Nach einer Begriffsbestimmung des Virtuellen werden verschiedene virtuelle Organisations- und Arbeitsbereiche vorgestellt und dahingehend untersucht, wie sie aufgebaut sind und wo die Vor- und Nachteile virtueller Organisationskonzepte liegen können. Im nächsten Kapitel wird dann erörtert, wie virtuelle Organisations- bzw. Unternehmenskonzepte erfolgreich realisiert werden können und auf welche Bereiche neue Anforderungen zukommen.

Im nächsten Kapitel wird dann eine empirische Untersuchung zu virtuellen Organisationsformen diskutiert und beispielhaft anhand einiger realisierter virtueller Unternehmenskonzepte die Brücke zur Praxis geschlossen. Zum Schluss werden alle Ergebnisse bilanziert und in ein bewertendes Fazit eingebettet.
